It’s about two weeks into the month of October, the days are shorter, the leaves are changing then falling, and Halloween is right around the corner. If you are like myself then you love celebrating Halloween but you hate spending so much money on Halloween costumes and accessories. It doesn’t matter what party store you stumble into these things are always overpriced and you are most likely to see someone else wearing the same exact items. For several years now it has been a tradition of mine to “make up” my own Halloween costumes from my own ideas, then rummaging around my house to see what I can come up with. My costume ideas are not exactly original but when I get my clothes, shoes, hair, make-up, and accessories all on it sure turns into something one of a kind. Here are some photos of me in my different costumes through the years.

 1. Sexy Construction Worker

    What you will need:

  • Thigh high tube socks        FREE
  • Orange spenders                 $5

  • White tank                            FREE

  • Jean shorts                           FREE

  • Hard hat                                $20

  • Combat style boots           FREE

  • Any color bandana            FREE

                                       Total: $25

I had most of these items in my house already those are the ones I marked “FREE”. The only things I had to buy were the orange spenders and hardhat, which cost me about $25 bucks (mostly because I had to spring for the hard hat that lite up).
 2. Gothic Girl

        What you will need:

  • Colored wig                       $15
  • Black tank                          FREE

  • Black skirt                          FREE

  • Fishnet stockings            $5

  • Gothic style jewelry        $5

  • Black lipstick                     $1

  •                                 Total: $26
This was one of my favorite spontaneous costume ideas. My first Halloween in my new apartment two and half years ago, as you can imagine I was on a tight budget so thank god it cost about a third of a regular store bought costume.
    3. Disco Chick

        What you will need:

    • Blonde/ pink long hair wig     $20
  • 60’s or 70’s style sexy dress    FREE

  • Thigh high boots high heel      FREE

  • Gold jewelry                                  FREE

  • Red lipstick                                   $5

  •                                                  Total: $25
Despite people thinking I was a blow up doll the whole night, I thought this was a cute costume idea and I only had to purchase two items. The less money you spend on your costume the more you can spend on celebrating.
     4. Groovy Hippie Chick

         What you will need:

    • Flower scarf                          FREE
  • Tube top                                 FREE

  • Mesh vest                               $10

  • Elephant bell style jeans    $20

  • Beads                                       FREE

  • Fake butterfly tattoo          $2

  •                                          Total: $32
This one is a little more expensive then the other costume ideas, but it came together super groovy and totally original. I was getting compliments left and right all night, so to me it was totally worth it and still way cheaper then a store bought costume.
    5. Trailer Trash

        What you will need:

    • Blonde unkempt wig               $10
  • Cut off crazy pattern top        FREE

  • Jean shirt with holes                FREE

  • Boots                                             FREE

  • Crazy fake custom jewelry      $5

  • Fake tattoos                                 $5

  • Black out tooth                           $5

  •                                            Total: $25
This costume was a huge hit. I even had my boyfriend at the time dress like a hillbilly redneck with a fake mustache and crazy mullet. It is always fun to get family and friends to match up with your costume ideas, makes a great statement at any Halloween gathering.
Making up your own costume for Halloween is just as fun as celebrating this spooky holiday. You are guaranteed to not run into someone with the same exact ensemble as you and turn quite a few heads in the process. I hope you try one of these fabulous costume ideas or even better share one of your own. Have a safe and scary Halloween.
