10 Surprising Facts Your Probably Didn’t Know About Valentine’s Day

Unless you are living underneath a rock or don’t live in one of the countries that celebrate Valentine’s Day I am sure you are 100 % aware of what Valentine’s Day is about. Just in case…Valentine’s Day is a day where it is traditional to show your significant other how much you love and care from them by sharing a small token of your affection on February 14th. Traditional gifts are usually candy, flowers, and/ or
a love note/ romantic card. Some people can’t wait to celebrate while others cringe at the thought of celebrating such a “commercialized” holiday where many companies profit off of the emotions of others. My personal thoughts immediately went to the religious aspect and to dig deeper into the facts behind the celebration of this “love giving” and “love getting” holiday.

Here are 10 things about V day you may or may not know:

1. Valentine’s Day was based both on Christian and Catholic traditions (non-biblical). The Catholic Church recognizes at least three saints named Valentius, all of whom where martyred for helping Christians.

2. Valentine was believed to defy the rules made up by Emperor Claudis II, which outlawed marriage because he felt like single young men made better soldiers than married ones with families.

3. One St. Valentine was a Roman priest who performed secret wedding ceremonies against the authorities in the 13th century.

4. The same St. Valentine was caught and imprisoned where he healed the daughter of the captor from blindness renewing faith in Christianity.

5. St. Valentine was tortured and decapitated on February 14th as many others who stood up for religious beliefs.

6. Valentine’s Day becomes associated with love starting in the late Middle Ages thanks to an English poet.

7. Another St. Valentine (Bishop of Terni) was also beheaded on February 14th for healing and preforming secret weddings, which were outlawed at the time.

8. Valentine’s Day was also an effort on the Christian part to do away with a pagan holiday, Lupercalia. This festival was a bloody, violent, and sexually charged celebration that consists of animal sacrifice and matchmaking in the hopes to ward off evil spirits and infertility.

9. In the 5th century, Pope Gelasius deemed Lupercalia (February 15th) as, “un-Christian” and replaced it with Valentine’s Day (February 14th).

10. The oldest known Valentine, which the romance of this holiday didn’t start until around 1400s, was written by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife when he was imprisoned in the form of a poem.

Today Valentine’s Day is filled with romantic gestures so it is hard to imagine that this wasn’t always what the holiday stood for. It was actually based on violent barbaric false traditions that Christians tried hard to put a stop too in the name of Jesus. In turn, they were also subjected to harsh imprisonments which in many cases ended in execution. Whether you choose to en-knowledge the commercialized aspect of V day we must not forget the history behind the holiday so we can not repeat the same horrible events and traditions.

If you have another historically accurate fact about Valentine’s Day that most people aren’t aware of please share in the comments. I hope you all had a wonderful, loving Valentine’s Day and weekend with your loved one, family, and friends.

Start the Day with Praising Him!

How many times do you get up in the morning unmotivated, tired, and finding it hard to get out of bed? I know I feel like this more days then I would like to admit. What makes my day better and helps me start off positive and motivated for the day ahead in prayer.

Let’s start the day off right by praising God and letting Him guide and help us for the day ahead:

Dear Lord,
I want to grow in you and have more of you in my life. I pray that you will strengthen me in using me and my talents to glorify you. I thank you for loving me and forgiving my sins each day, every day. I pray you will reveal yourself in my life. Give me your wisdom as to what I should do in every situation and strengthen my obedience in what you ask of me. Show me the right path to travel and correct my ways if I stray. Show me ways to show and spread your love to those around me. Clear my mind to receive crystal clear clarity when you speak. Help align my heart and mind in their purest form to be an imitation of you. Thank you for answering all my prayers in your perfect timing with your perfect answer, even though I may not always understand. In your name, I pray. Amen.

Let me know how your day goes after you start praying everyday especially in the morning right after you get out of bed. I know my day goes a lot smoother when I have Jesus on my side.

Have a great day! God bless you all!

Land of the Free & the Home of the Brave!

Happy Independence Day! We are so lucky to be living in America and today is the day to remember those freedoms and the brave men and women who fought for those freedoms. It is a time to remember the soldiers still fighting today and is away from their families and friends.

We are so lucky to be in a country that respects and enforces the freedoms of religion and the freedom to preach the word of Christ without prosecution. In many other countries, people are being punished and even killed for having a bible or the mere mention of their devotion and love for Jesus.

Let’s take today to reflect on those freedoms and scriptures that remind us of that while spending time with friends and family:

Now the Lord is the Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”

2 Corinthians 3:17 ASV

If therefore the Son shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”

John 8:36 ASV

For ye, brethren, were called for freedom; only use not your freedom for an occasion to the flesh, but through love be servants one to another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.”

Galatians 5:13-14 ASV

For freedom did Christ set us free: stand fast therefore, and be not entangled again in a yoke of bondage.”

Galatians 5:1 ASV

And I shall walk at liberty; For I have sought thy precepts.”

Psalms 119:45 ASV

Have a happy and safe July 4th! God bless America and you all!

Best Gift You Can Give Mom

The best gift you can give Mom on Mother’s Day isn’t flowers, candy, a spa day, a trip, or even money. I’m sure these things won’t hurt and your Mom would appreciate anything you can give to her. The best gift you can give your Mom or any Mom on Mother’s Day is reminding her that she is special and God loves her.

Being a Mom is the hardest job on earth and it can be a thankless job to boot. I am not a Mother yet but I have a Mom who is wonderful plus most of my friends are young Moms. I also have a sister who is a Mom-to-be and my whole family is extremely excited to welcome the baby when she arrives.

Remind all the Moms in your life that Jesus is on her side especially on those really hard days. Here are seven biblical scriptures below that you can read to your Mom on Mother’s Day:

1. ‘To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: ‘Ecclesiastes 3:1

2. ‘ Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. ‘ Matthew 7:16-18

3. ‘But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. ‘ Luke 18:16

4. ‘ For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. ‘ John 13:15

5. ‘Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. ‘ Hebrews 7:25

6. ‘It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. ‘ Lamentations 3:22-23

7. ‘Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ: ‘ Philippians 1:6

You can even get creative with the scriptures by printing them out and framing for Mom or personalizing a mug, blanket, or pillow for her so when she is feeling down she knows Jesus is always HERE for her.

Have a Happy and Blessed Mother’s Day!
